Types of Hypotheses

There are mainly two types of hypotheses in psychology:

  • Alternative Hypothesis (H1): This suggests that there is an effect or relationship. For instance, “Increased sleep improves memory retention.”

  • Directional Hypothesis: Predicts the specific direction of the relationship. For example, “More caffeine will lead to better focus.”
  • Non-Directional Hypothesis: Only states that there will be a difference or relationship without specifying the direction. For example, “Caffeine affects focus.”

  • Example 1: A researcher wants to know if exercise affects mood. Hypothesis: “Regular exercise increases feelings of happiness.”
  • Example 2: A psychologist studies the impact of social media on self-esteem. Hypothesis: “Increased social media usage lowers self-esteem among teenagers.”
  • Example 3: A study on the effects of music on concentration. Hypothesis: “Listening to classical music improves concentration during studying.”

Comparison Between Null and Alternative Hypotheses

  • Null Hypothesis: “There is no difference in test scores between students who study with music and those who study in silence.”
  • Alternative Hypothesis: “Students who study with music score higher on tests than those who study in silence.”
