Functional fixedness is a psychological concept that can stifle our creativity and problemsolving abilities. It refers to the tendency to see objects as only functioning in their usual or traditional way. This mental block can prevent us from thinking outside the box and finding innovative solutions.

What is Functional Fixedness?

Functional fixedness occurs when we are unable to utilize an object in a way that differs from its typical function. For instance, if you need to tighten a screw but only have a coin, functional fixedness might make you overlook the coin as a possible tool. Instead, you might only think of a screwdriver, which isn’t available.

Real-Life Examples

  • Cooking: Imagine you don’t have a whisk, but you do have a fork. If you’re stuck in functional fixedness, you might waste time searching for a whisk instead of using the fork to mix your ingredients.
  • Home Repairs: If you need to hang a picture but can’t find a hammer, you might forget that a shoe can work just as well to tap in a nail.
  • Technology: When using software, people often stick to familiar tools, overlooking alternative features that could simplify their tasks.

Types of Functional Fixedness

While functional fixedness can occur with any object, it often manifests in two primary ways:

  1. Cognitive Fixedness: This is when your brain is rigid about how to approach a problem, limiting your options to conventional solutions.
  2. Behavioral Fixedness: This involves sticking to a particular method or tool for a task, despite the availability of other effective options.
