For example, if you hear a sequence of tones where most are the same, but one is different, your brain pays special attention to that odd tone. This method helps scientists study attention, perception, and memory.

Steps in the Oddball Paradigm

  1. Selection of Stimuli: Choose a set of stimuli. These can be sounds, images, or words. Most will be similar, and a few will be the oddball.
  2. Presentation: Present these stimuli in a random order to participants.
